Introduction: One-third of people between the ages of 63 and 94 years have knee OA and may be incapacitating due to symptoms such as muscle weakness, joint stiffness, pain, proprioception deficit, promoting reduced range of motion and antalgic posture. Functional capacity tests are objectively measurable clinical tests, and when employed in clinical practice they can provide objective measurement of the treatment, helping to chart the goals and serving as an objective measure of the outcomes provided by the physiotherapeutic intervention of patients with knee OA. Objective: Analyze which are the most commonly used functional capacity tests in randomized clinical trials and investigate whether these tests are able to detect exercise efficacy through functional capacity tests in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. Methods: A simple literature review based on the most recent publication on exercises in knee osteoarthritis in the Cochrane Library database. Results: Seventeen different types of functional capacity tests were found in the articles Three were the most used, being the tests of walk in hard ground (n = 18), sit and stand chair tests (n = 8) and climb and descend tests (n = 8), and both tests were able to detect exercise efficacy, P <0.00001, P = 0.007, P = 0.0005, respectively. Conclusion: There are several types of functional capacity tests described in the literature, such as walk, sit and stand tests, climb and descend stairs capable of demonstrating functional change in people with knee OA.pt_BR
