| Abstract: | O romance Quarup, de Antonio Callado, publicado em 1967, marcou o ambiente cultural e o debate público sobre o papel da intelectualidade diante da crise política vivida no Brasil desde o golpe militar de 1964. Tem sido observada nesse livro a oscilação entre a utopia e o desencanto. No entanto, a pesquisa sobre a sua primeira recepção mostra que o polo desencantado inicialmente não despertou tanta atenção quanto o apelo ao engajamento político do intelectual, no sentido proposto por Jean-Paul Sartre. Este artigo discute esse fato a partir da análise de alguns dos principais aspectos do contexto da publicação do romance. |
| Abstract: | Since it came out in 1967, Antonio Callado’s novel Quarupbecame a milestone in the Brazilian cultural setting and the public debate on the role of intelligentsia in response to the military coup of 1964. The oscillation between utopia and disenchantment has been noted in the book. However, research on its immediate reception shows that firstly the disenchanted side did not attract as much attention as the demand for political engagement of intellectuals, in the sense proposed by Jean-Paul Sartre. This article discusses this fact by analyzing some of the main aspects of the intellectual and political context of the novel’s publication. |
