Abstract: | In the context of the algorithmic culture in which digital platforms operate under the aegis of the logic of data colonialism, there are significant changes in the process of perception and consolidation of musical culture. This article intends to highlight the intersections of algorithmic mediation in the provision of content on a music streaming platform and its possible consequences in the reconfiguration of musical taste. The theoretical referential seeks to emphasize the displacement of the notion of mediation in the context of algorithmic culture and its tensions in cultural consumption. Moreover, we sought to reflect on how the notion of coloniality is presented in algorithmic systems and how it can impose new ways of being, thinking and feeling, directly impacting culture. Content analysis was adopted for description, interpretation, inferences and categorization. The Spotify music streaming platform was taken as an empirical reference. The results suggest that algorithmic mediation on music streaming platforms tends to offer content based on similarity, reducing users to worlds that are not permeable to diversity. |
