Abstract: The aim of the work is to investigate the effect of utilizing crushing bodies of special shape as the medium for ore grinding. The crushing bodies utilized in this study are modified spheres with a concave portion. As compared to a conventional sphere, the concave-convex grinding ball has a smaller volume for the same specific surface area, leading to increased efficiency of grinding. The geometry of the contact betweenconcave and convex surfaces of different balls favors the preferential grinding of the larger particles, preventing the over-grinding of the finer product. Experiments was carried out in laboratory, with batches of the same feed, ground first with conventional balls of various sizes. Special concave-convex balls, increasing the specific surface area of the grinding balls replaced the grinding medium of three conventional grinding balls,1/2 to 5/8, 1/2 to 3/4 and 3/4 to 1. The grinding medium was replaced also by cylpebs. With the results of the tests, the specific rate of breakage, the breakage function and the energy consumption was calculated. It was searched the correspondence between the spheres, concave bodies and cylpebs. The size distributions of each grinding bodys charge was compared. It was observed a very different grinding bodys behavior according to the material being ground. For sand, the concaves behavior was approximately compared with the 3/4 to 1 in spite of the surface area of those spherical balls is 74% of the concave bodies. For iron ore, the concaves behavior was approximately compared with the 5/8 to 1/2 in spite of the surface area of those spherical balls is 122% of the concave bodies.
