Abstract

With demographic changes happening around the world faced with a large elderly population, growing every day, that leaves us happy because we are living longer, but on the other hand comes the concern if we are really prepared to face the current reality. With the growth of the elderly population are chronic diseases like hypertension, with high morbimortalidade, difficult to control and asymptomatic, which requires a change in lifestyle and a commitment on the use of medication. However, we come across elderly poly pharmaceuticals, sedentary, smokers, some make use of alcoholic beverage, most are obese, and many are illiterate, who has difficulty in joining the antihypertensive drug treatment, running a serious risk of target organ symptoms and complications. With this work of literature review we demonstrate the elderly hypertensive and the difficulty in joining the antihypertensive treatment and show that with the deployment of self-care, through Orem theory, we can change the concepts of the elderly in relation to health and disease and who knows to achieve adherence to antihypertensive drug treatment.
