dc.description.abstractThere are two major paradigms in the interpretation of ancient philosophers: the analytical and the structural. Despite their particularities, they agree that philosophy is mainly a matter of theses, arguments and discourse, which leads them to ignore extra-discursive aspects of the texts. But if ancient philosophy is also, as Pierre Hadot pointed out, a way of life, this type of reading will have its limitations. I try here to consider these limitations with a discussion of Gregory Vlastos' thesis that there would be, in the Symposium (and other dialogues), a platonic theory of love, arguing that this dialogue is not a treatise on love, but a proteptic text about philosophy and the role that love has in its journey.pt_BR
dc.description.resumoExistem hoje dois grandes paradigmas na interpretação dos filósofos antigos: o analítico e o estrutural. Apesar de suas particularidades, eles coincidem em considerar que a filosofia é sobretudo uma questão de teses, argumentos e discurso, o que os leva a ignorar aspectos extra-discursivos dos textos. Mas, se a filosofia antiga é também, como apontou Pierre Hadot, um modo de vida, esse tipo de leitura terá suas limitações. Busco aqui considerar essas limitações a partir de uma discussão da tese de Gregory Vlastos de que haveria, no Banquete (e em outros diálogos), uma teoria platônica do amor, defendendo que esse diálogo não é um tratado sobre o amor, mas um texto protréptico sobre a filosofia e o papel que o amor tem em sua jornada.pt_BR
