Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the role of the archival information in the decision-making process in public universities. A case study was carried out in the State University of Londrina, in Paraná, together with two deliberative bodies: the University Council and the Administration Council. As for that, the qualitative research was used, adopting the critical incident and the document analysis technique. It was used the semi-structured interview whose analysis was carried out based on Bardins theory. It was analyzed the route of a process, within the institution, that was considered as an object of deliberation by, at least, two superior councils, interviewing the actors of the process (responsible for the information recorded in the abovementioned process) and the decision makers, by means of a semi-structured syllabus. It was observed that, in relation to the elements that hinder to obtain and retrieve information, the most relevant aspect pointed out by the university administrators, is related to fragmentation and scattering of information in the University, a reality that derived from the absence of a document management policy. It was also observed that the collegiate decision model is the most adopted in the institution. It was identified in the document analysis as well as in the interviews, that the archival information is used a lot by the university administrators, in the context of their actions for the decision-making, independently of the management model adopted by the University. It was also verified that in the area literature where the subjects related to administration, strategic information and competitive intelligence are mentioned it is not observed any reference to the archival information. Nevertheless, the strategic information shows characteristics and peculiarities of the archival information.
