Abstract: Participation has a fundamental importance for the collective construction of a democratic management, making the whole school community co-responsible for the school. Seeking to understand the perception of the school community about democratic management, participation and participation tools, a study was elaborated whose main objective is to investigate how the school community understands school management from a democratic perspective, specifically in the context of a Primary School in the city of Belo Horizonte - Minas Gerais. The research was divided into two stages, the first was a literature review to understand the concept of democratic management in public schools and the second stage was an exploratory action research whose data collection was through interviews. The review in this paper considers the conceptualizations of HORA (2012) PARO (2016) VEIGA (2013) LÜK (2013), who consider that the participation has a fundamental importance for the collective construction of a democratic management, making the whole school community co-responsible for the school. The action research involved representatives of the school community through data collection conducted with 19 parents, 2 teachers, 2 staff members, 3 managers of a Municipal Primary School in Belo Horizonte / MG. The interviews were semi-structured and addressed conceptual aspects and experiences about the democratic dimension in school. The results were presented in tables and graphs that compare the answers to the different themes in each of the above mentioned school community categories. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data was arranged in two macro categories, bringing together the responses of parents in one chapter and the other ones in another, so it was possible to verify that there is a difference between the answers given by parents and the people who work in the school about the functioning of participatory management tools. Based on these answers, we consider that the school has much to develop to reach the fullness of a participative democratic management and that this process is taking happening with some delay due to the recent transition process of the school, which was a Municipal Primary School, linked to a main school, and today is an independent school.
