Abstract: | : This paper seeks to delineate the concepts of financial exclusion, its precedents and consequences in order to understand how this inherently spatial phenomenon is responsible for limiting development. From a post-keynesian theoretical approach, financial exclusion will be analyzed through its spatial effects, especially over the development of Brazilian regions. The main argument is that financial exclusion is a phenomenon that is inherently territorial and, as such, must be analyzed accordingly. If such view is accredited, the Social Money initiatives, as an alternative to mitigate financial exclusion, should also be analyzed through its spatial characteristics. The main conclusion is that Social Money initiatives are inherently fragile, being susceptible to external effects coming from other territories and, most of all, to influences and dominance of the formal financial system. Social Money Systems should assume its identity as an alternative to the current dominant system and reaffirm its social and territorial nature, or else they might end up replicating a systemic financial logic that does not match the socio-spatial reality of the attended communities. |
