| Abstract: | This article focuses on the changes made to the cartography of southern Africa between 1725 and 1749 by the French geographer Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville. The maps in question were produced in collaboration with the Portuguese ambassador Dom Luís da Cunha as part of d’Anville’s plan to demonstrate what lay between the Portuguese colonies of Angola in the west and Mozambique in the east and to establish a link across the continent. The maps he produced in the first two phases of his mapping of southern Africa (1725–1731) echoed the traditional horror vacui. The vast blank that appeared on his map of Afrique of 1749, however, has to be seen as d’Anville intended—the integration of empty space on a map with Enlightenment rationalization of geography. |
| Abstract: | Este artículo se centra en los cambios en la cartografía de África meridional realizados entre 1725 y 1749 por el cartógrafo francés Jean Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville. Los mapas en cuestión fueron producidos en colaboración con el embajador portugués D. Luís da Cunha, como parte del plan de d’Anville para demostrar lo que existía entre las colonias portuguesas de Angola en el oeste y Mozambique en el este, y establecer una conexión a través del continente. El mapa que él produjo en la primera de las dos fases de su cartografía de África meridional (1725–1731) se hacía eco del tradicional horror vacui. Sin embargo, el vasto espacio en blanco que aparecía en su mapa de África de 1749 debe ser considerado como la intencionada integración racional por parte de d’Ánville de un espacio vacío en un mapa durante la Ilustración de la geografía. |
