Abstract

Early breastfeeding is a practice recommended by global health agencies, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), as breastfeeding is a protective factor that reduces infant morbidity and mortality. It is one of the practices among the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding established by the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), whose main purpose is to promote adherence to breastfeeding by the mother-child binomial. The intervention project on the promotion of breastfeeding with the help of the mother in breastfeeding in the first half hour after childbirth is aimed at helping mothers to breastfeed. The objective is to promote breastfeeding in the first half hour after childbirth. Specifically, involve the nurse obstetrician in the leadership and supervision of helping the mother to initiate breastfeeding within the first half hour after childbirth; Build, with nursing professionals, the encouragement and assistance to these mothers; Establish means of registration that favor the execution of the assistance to the mother, by the nursing professionals. As an intervention strategy, meetings were used to present, update, analyze, discuss,evaluate and plan the actions focused on the theme. With the construction of the intervention, the goal established for the implementation of the mother's breastfeeding practice in the first half hour after childbirth was achieved in just four months. Thestudy showed that nursing professionals did not have the involvement and practice of helping the mother in early breastfeeding, and there were no means of recording this activity. To maintain the goal, practitioners need to keep evaluative meetings. It also showed that skin-to-skin contact was one of the practices to encourage breastfeeding implanted in the service, as well as the beginning of the late clamping of the umbilical cord. As an aid to the practice of early breastfeeding, a partnership was established with the Basic Health Care for prenatal guidelines, and the Breastfeeding and Ambulance Ambulatory was created in Maternity, as a support to the mothers in the possible difficulties encountered during the course of breastfeeding.
