Abstract: | The topic ‘sleep’ seems to be invisible to society, but it implies undisputed personal consequences, especially for adolescents’ learning. The following reasons validate the relevance of this research: it favors a field of discussion and reflection among teachers interested in improving adolescent students' learning and sleep quality; it highlights the importance of introducing the topic ‘Sleep Ergotherapy’ as a syllabus content for Middle School. This study aimed at understanding the implications of sleep on adolescents’ learning process, through the following actions: to verify if there is a relationship between sleep and school performance of Middle School adolescents; to find out if Integrated School make it possible to include the topic of sleep in Middle School classes; to identify teachers' knowledge under the topic of sleep; to develop a smartphone app under the topic Sleep Ergotherapy. The methodology applied was qualitative propositional in two distinct and complementary moments: at first, the research data were produced through the observation of pedagogical practices of Middle School teachers and adolescents at Escola Municipal Vida and through semi-structured interviews with six teachers; and in the second moment, an app on Sleep Ergotherapy was developed. As research results, the following were identified: the teachers' superficial description of the relationship between sleep and learning in adolescents; the influence of family and cell phone on adolescents' sleep and learning; getting enough sleep benefits learning more than psychostimulant medications; and the teachers' annoyances regarding the possibility of including Sleep Ergotherapy in the school syllabus. Therefore, sleeping is a basic physiological need in life that favors learning and lacks prominence in middle school syllabuses. |
