| Abstract: | Investigando a oferta comercial de espetáculos de circo em Minas Gerais na última década do século 19, o objetivo deste artigo é analisar os efeitos da infraestrutura de transportes sobre uma arte popular produzida para o entretenimento. Para isso, utilizamos simultaneamente fontes primárias e secundárias diversas, especialmente jornais, censos, livros de memória e livros de viagem. Nesse período, tanto pela capacidade de reduzirem custos de transporte, quanto pelos estímulos mais gerais oferecidos para o crescimento econômico de Minas Gerais, ferrovias foram dispositivos bastante importantes na ampliação de oportunidades de oferta e de consumo cultural de espetáculos de circo. |
| Abstract: | Researching the commercial surplus of circus shows in Minas Gerais, a province of Brazil, in the last decade of the 19th century, the aim of this article is to analyze the effects of transport infrastructure on a popular art made for entertainment. With this purpose, we used simultaneously several primary and secondary sources, especially newspapers, demographic census, memory books and travel books. In this period, railroads were very important devices for the expansion of opportunities of cultural supply and consumption of circus spectacles, because of the capacity to reduce transportation costs and the more general incentives offered for the economic growth of Minas Gerais. |
