| Abstract: | Purpose The study aims to propose the use of the semiotics inspection method (SIM) which is an interpretative and qualitative method from semiotics engineering (SE) for the evaluation of the communicability of systems and to evaluate digital libraries and information retrieval systems (IRS). The paper presents the results of the application of this method in the evaluation of the quality of the communicability of the interface and search system of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) Portal of e-Journals, a major scientific digital library in Brazil. There are proposed solutions to improve this system included. Design/methodology/approach The study used the SIM to evaluate the system. Two evaluators inspected the system. They performed the comparison and the analysis of three types of metamessages (metalinguistic, static and dynamic). The metamessages generated by the evaluators were contrasted to find inconsistencies and ambiguities in the CAPES Portal of e-Journals. Finally, the last step of the method was the final assessment about the inspection. Findings The evaluators identified 52 problems of communicability. These problems were ranked according to severity ratings established by Nielsen (1994). They were grouped in ten types of problems present in the interface and in the search system of the CAPES Portal of e-Journals. Originality value This research contributes theoretically to the field of information retrieval and to the area of human–computer interaction and, in particular, to the theory of SE by adapting SE methods that allow the evaluation of communicability to the context of the scientific IRS. Results obtained through scientific methods should contribute to development of the interface and search tools of IRS to better support query formulation and retrieval of relevant information and more efficiently satisfy the information needs of individuals. |
| Abstract: | Objetivo O estudo tem como objetivo propor o uso do método de inspeção semiótica (SIM) que é um método interpretativo e qualitativo da engenharia semiótica (SE) para a avaliação da comunicabilidade de sistemas e para avaliar bibliotecas digitais e sistemas de recuperação de informação (IRS). O artigo apresenta os resultados da aplicação desse método na avaliação da qualidade da comunicabilidade da interface e sistema de busca do Portal de Periódicos Eletrônicos da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES), uma importante biblioteca científica digital. no Brasil. Existem soluções propostas para melhorar este sistema incluído. Design/metodologia/abordagem O estudo utilizou o SIM para avaliar o sistema. Dois avaliadores inspecionaram o sistema. Eles realizaram a comparação e a análise de três tipos de metamensagens (metalinguísticas, estáticas e dinâmicas). As metamensagens geradas pelos avaliadores foram contrastadas para encontrar inconsistências e ambiguidades no Portal de Periódicos Eletrônicos da CAPES. Por fim, a última etapa do método foi a avaliação final sobre a inspeção. Descobertas Os avaliadores identificaram 52 problemas de comunicabilidade. Esses problemas foram classificados de acordo com as classificações de gravidade estabelecidas por Nielsen (1994). Eles foram agrupados em dez tipos de problemas presentes na interface e no sistema de busca do Portal CAPES de Periódicos Eletrônicos. Valor de originalidade Esta pesquisa contribui teoricamente para o campo da recuperação da informação e para a área de interação humano-computador e, em particular, para a teoria da ES ao adaptar métodos de ES que permitem avaliar a comunicabilidade ao contexto da SRI científica. Os resultados obtidos por meio de métodos científicos devem contribuir para o desenvolvimento da interface e ferramentas de busca do IRS para melhor apoiar a formulação de consultas e a recuperação de informações relevantes e satisfazer de forma mais eficiente as necessidades de informação dos indivíduos. |
