Abstract: The island of Trindade, with an area of approximately 10 km², has volcanic origin and is located about 1,200 Km east of Vitória/ES in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. Because of its geographic isolation, it is a peculiar environment with fragile equilibrium. It has been strongly affected by human interference, mainly by the introduction of exoctic animals. One of them was the goats, that lived in the island for about 300 years before 1995, when researchers, environmental agencies and the Brazilian Navy took concerted action to completely abolish them. In spite of the efforts made to assist in the recovery of the island, there is still a gap as regards the studies of its paleogeographic evolution, not just in temporal scales, that goes back to its primary vegetal colonization, but also the process of the degradation of the landscape. It still has not been possible, for example, to validate the model suggested by Alves (1998), who said that the island was covered with 85% of tree vegetation. In this context is this proposal, which has as main objective giving subsidies for the reconstitution of the spacial distribution of its primary vegetation. They will use analysis of phytolith, which in general are microfossils (<60-100μm) of vegetal constituents formed by biogenic sílica. Those corpuscules produced by most of the plants remain in the ground/sediments for long periods of time with information of its original environment and information of the vegetal assemblies that produced them. So, in other words, this research gives subsidies, through the phytolith analysis, to discuss the spacial and temporal evolution of the landscape in the island of Trindade, in relation to natural and anthropogenic processes and phenomenons. The resuts gotten, in general, are promissing to eventual paleoenvironmental reconstitutions, because the morphotypes found in the Modern Assemblies and the phytolith indexes calculated were very consistente with the current vegetation and the pedological and morphological processes acting in the island. Few cases that are out of order are probably associated with intense erosive dynamics, with percolation of the siliceous bodies along the soil profile, with transport by wind action or with the bioturbation. The phytolith analysis of the Fossil Assemblies did not corroborate with the theory that most of the island was covered with tree species, because the globular morphotypes, typical of woody species, were just found in some higher regions, lower slope and thicker and more stable ground.
