Abstract

The Egyptians were the first to use papyrus. After the papyrus came the much tougher parchment. Since the invention of paper the man has used to this day. The tree bark paper had its advantage over the stones, the clay tablets to papyrus as well. The papyrus helped the culture of Egypt to be disseminated to other people. After the paper came the codex or codex. The Codex or codex is an improvement over parchment. AO printed book with the invention of printing by Johannes Gutenberg had expanded its production throughout the world. Following the digital culture has developed and expanded throughout the planet joining borders and people. At the same time, there are the electronic, digital, virtual and hybrid libraries. Given this historical background research focuses on analyzing and demonstrating the route of the printed book and the digital book. The research objective is to reflect on the fate of the paper and its replacement by digital. The research also demonstrates the importance of libraries as social institutions in the Information Society. The research begins with a historical survey where the timeline is divided into four stories highlighted the history of the role and history of digital. In a second step we applied the questionnaire in which the questions were answered by demonstrating knowledge of the respondents about the advantages and disadvantages of the two carriers were analyzed. The people who answered the questionnaire are students and teachers of the Federal University of Minas Gerais - UFMG. With the analysis of the questionnaire can be inferred that the printed book and the digital book will coexist. The paper is still needed in several areas of the Information Society.
