Abstract

The appraisal, being one of the important epistemological core of the area, since the postwar records explosion already brought new demands to the field of archives, to be thought and systematized in several countries, and read by the Brazilian archivistics. Thus, the objective of this work was to conduct an in-depth study on the scientific constructions and their practical use, considering the digital context, referring to the appraisal in some prominent countries on the subject, namely the United States, Canada and Australia, and the experience of Brazil from these international debates. The problem that the research proposed to study has as its central question: were there epistemological alterations in the appraisal, taking into account the advent of the digital context? The hypotheses worked in this research were that the appraisal undergoes epistemological changes still in a phase of maturation, which includes the rethinking of its theories and practices in changing contexts such as the digital world and in Brazil the influence of the Shellenberguian theoretical current is still predominant. Knowing these paths and the debates produced strengthens our scientific history and our own identity to continue evolving in the scientific field. As far as methodology is concerned, the research is qualitative in nature, exploratory and explanatory, and employed as a data collection technique the bibliographic and documental research and the application of questionnaires. The conclusion is that theoretical constructions about appraisal do not undergo significant epistemological changes, but the practices do, because the digital context is gradually changing the behavior necessary to perform Records Management, including appraisal. The knowledge and interaction of professionals who do appraisal should be closer, and would help to broaden their views and skills in appraisal processes. In Brazil, we need to create structural conditions for Records Management to come to concrete fruition, in dialogue with theory, to respond in more effective ways to the demands of the new contexts we face.
