Abstract: | This master's research presents a study on the religious imagery in ivory produced in the 18th and 19th centuries, present in Minas Gerais, with a focus on the representations of Saint Anthony. These works come from territories colonized by the Portuguese from the 15th century onwards, as a result of the process of miscegenation and cultural transit. The antonian devotion had a strong presence in the spaces colonized by the Portuguese Colonial Empire, having its study approached in this research under the historical, artistic, cultural aspects, in its materiais and immaterial dimension. The works studied are analyzed under aspects of the History of Technical Art in order to identify their main iconographic and technical characteristics, expanding the understanding of a theme that still leaves us with significant questions about its production, circularity, uses, belonging and appropriation of cultural meanings. Ivory is a raw material that does not exist in the brazilian geographic space; due to this particularity, it is necessary to understand the circularity of the works manufactured with this support by the luso-brazilian universe, of their artistic work, and the correlations that these works establish with the religious imagery produced in the territory of Minas Gerais in the time frame performed in this research. |
