Abstract

Stroke is a chronic health condition due to a sudden interruption of blood flow to some region of the brain. It may present deficiencies in the muscu-lar strength and functionality of the individual, impairment of physical and social capacity. The aim of the study was to investigate, through a litera-ture review, the influence of functional electrostimulation (FES) on muscle strength gain and improvement of upper limb functionality after stroke. The search was conducted in August 2019, in the electronic databases: Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs). Inclusion criteria were: individuals after stroke over 18 years of age, with chronic disease involvement, (FES) intervention effect on muscle strengthening and upper limb functionality, experimental and observational clinical studies. Five studies were selected for this review. The five studies showed a positive outcome in the patients' report in improving muscle strength, inhibiting the spasticity of antagonists, correcting contractures, increasing passive range of motion and facilitating voluntary motor control and functionality in their basic tasks (ADL's), through the use of Functional Electrostimulation (FES). Based on the results found in this review, further experimental studies are needed, so that there is greater reliability in the proposed treatment within long-term clinical practice to reach a more confident conclusion about this rehabilitation method.
