| Abstract: | O artigo propõe uma análise dos escritos de crítica de Machado de Assis pertencentes à sua fase inicial, de 1856 a 1880. O objetivo é discutir as noções de nacional e estrangeiro como valores constitutivos da literatura brasileira, aproveitando as conclusões do escritor quando analisa obras da literatura e do teatro produzidas no Brasil. Veremos que os termos, longe de se negarem mutuamente, mostram-se complementares e problematizadores da realidade cultural brasileira. |
| Abstract: | The paper proposes an analysis of Machado de Assis’s writings that belong to the first period of his literary criticism, from 1856 to 1880. The aim is to discuss the national and foreign notions as values that are constitutive of Brazilian literature, taking advantage of the writer’s conclusions when he analyzes literature and theater oeuvres produced in Brazil. We will see that these concepts, far from negating each other, prove to complement each other and to problematize Brazilian cultural reality. |
