Resumen: The article discusses the immediate challenges of the Brazilian educational context in the face of changes in the legislation that regulates the funding of basic education, which directly interferes in the appreciation of education professionals (pay and training), as well as in the conditions of educational offer. Therefore, it seeks to analyze the challenges of public basic education in the country, in the context of a pandemic, which contributed to the increase in poverty and the deepening of social inequalities. Attention is also paid to the changes that took place in education during this period, especially those related to the organization of teaching work and its possible consequences both on school culture and on the health of the professionals. Finally, the lessons learned during the pandemic and the challenges of the postpandemic period are emphasized, which involve the physical reform of schools and the appreciation of teachers, to which the resources of the Fund for the Maintenance and Development of Basic Education and for the Appreciation of Education Professionals (Fundeb), should be directed, taking into account criteria that promote greater social justice.
