Abstract

The present study aims to evaluate the place of the father figure in Freudian elaborations about the Oedipus complex, and investigate how this complex is used in the clinical management of neurosis and psychosis. For this purpose, the methodology used was a theoretical study of the writings of Freud, and other authors such as Peter Gay, Dor and Silvestre, who reiterated the importance of the father in the Oedipus complex. There is the idea that the father, not just treating the father as agent of the common fatherhood, but also as the symbolic operator, has a central role in the constitution of the subject, not only in his mental development as well as in the organization of life in society. A comparison between what happens in the Oedipus complex in neurosis and psychosis was performed, checking what the importance of father figure in both structures, which led us to confirm the key role that the father has not only in theory Freud on the constitution of the subject, but also in their clinical approach.
