| Abstract: | Seguindo uma abordagem intertextual, este artigo investiga a presença da etnografia antiga em dois textos poéticos latinos: a digressão sobre os citas, nas Geórgicas, de Virgílio (3.349-383), e a elegia 3.10 dos Tristia, de Ovídio. Analisamos, nesses textos, as descrições de ambientes extremos de clima frio e as relações entre tais lugares e os povos que os habitam, considerados bárbaros pelos romanos. Ademais, explicamos como a imagem do estrangeiro é construída em oposição aos romanos e a Roma, tanto por Virgílio, em seu louvor dos campos italianos, como por Ovídio, em sua representação negativa das terras do exílio |
| Abstract: | Taking into consideration an intertextual approach, this paper looks into the presence of ancient ethnography in two Latin poems: the digression about the Scythians, in Virgil’s Georgics 3.349-383, and the elegy 3.10 of ovid’s Tristia. We analyze, in the above-mentioned texts, the descriptions of extreme environments characterized by a cold climate and the relation between these places and its inhabitants considered barbarian by the Romans. Besides, we explain how the image of foreign people is constructed in opposition to the Romans and to Rome, on the one hand by Virgil, in his praise of the Italian fields, on the other by ovid, in his negative depiction of the lands of exile, situated on the borders of the Empire. |
