Abstract: | This study aimed relating the biological resistance of seven eucalypts wood species to xylophagous termites with physicochemical characteristics of wood under laboratory conditions. Two 12-year-old trees were randomly sampled by species to determine the basic density, and to chemical analyses and biological bioassay, a log of 2.20 m obtained from the first section of each tree was employed. For bioassays, the sampling was carried out in two positions in pith-bark direction (heartwood and transition region) and correlations among biological resistance and the physicochemical characteristics of the woods. The highest values of extractives were obtained for the Eucalyptus camaldulensis (median heartwood = 13.89% and transition region = 14.84%), and the lowest ones for E. grandis (median heartwood = 4.54%) and E. urophylla (transition region = 5.51%). The mortality of termites is most likely related to the consumption of toxic compounds present in the wood. |
