Abstract

The study's central theme is the institutional care of children and adolescents. The objective was to analyze the potentialities and challenges relating to structural and organizational aspects in institutional residences, in addition to the difficulties in carrying out actions that favor the purpose of provisional protection measures in the social assistance network. We also sought to highlight the labor issues that occur in this environment, showing the need to look at the experience of social professionals. The dissertation consists of two articles. In the first, an autoethnography was developed from the author's memories as coordinator of two institutional residences for children and adolescents. In this way, it was possible to write a piece of writing (graphy) based on my professional experience (self) in the work and cultural environments relevant to institutional reception (ethno). This writing discusses the challenges and potentialities of these care organizations, in addition to the obstacles in communication and the weakening of interaction with the social assistance and intersectoral network. In the second article, a narrative review was used to deepen the debate on social relationships between caregivers and the children and adolescents of these social residences, with the concepts of Social Bond and Social Capital being used to demonstrate that the period in an institutional residence can develop and promote autonomy. In the results, the need for public policy investments in the reception service stands out, from structural, organizational and technical issues, as well as in the creation of spaces to reflect and deliberate on the role of the caregiver/educator as a transformative agent. This will obtain support in the construction of a non-formal education and in the social relationships established in institutional care.
