| Abstract: | The present report describes the clinical, macroscopic and histologic findings associated with Halicephalobus gingivalis infection in a male Arab horse, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The animal presented with acute neurologic signs that quickly progressed to a comatose status. Due to the lack of response to therapy, rapid progression of signs and poor prognosis, the horse was euthanized. Post-mortem examination revealed large granulomatous nodules in the kidneys. Renal and internal iliac lymph nodes were enlarged and with loss of corticomedullary distinction. Histopathology revealed granulomatous encephalitis, nephritis, lymphadenitis and focal granulomatous pneumonia associated with marked and chronic infection caused by H. gingivalis. This is the first report of H. gingivalis infection in horses in Minas Gerais. H. gingivalis infection should be included in the list of differential diagnosis of equine neurologic diseases in the state of Minas Gerais. |
| Abstract: | O presente relato descreve os achados clínicos, macroscópicos e histológicos associados à infecção por Halicephalobus gingivalis em um cavalo árabe macho, no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. O animal apresentou sinais neurológicos agudos que rapidamente evoluíram para estado comatoso. Devido à falta de resposta à terapia, rápida progressão dos sinais e mau prognóstico, o cavalo foi sacrificado. O exame post-mortem revelou grandes nódulos granulomatosos nos rins. Linfonodos renais e ilíacos internos estavam aumentados e com perda de distinção corticomedular. A histopatologia revelou encefalite granulomatosa, nefrite, linfadenite e pneumonia granulomatosa focal associada a infecção acentuada e crônica causada por H. gingivalis. Este é o primeiro relato de infecção por H. gingivalis em equinos em Minas Gerais. A infecção por H. gingivalis deve ser incluída na lista de diagnósticos diferenciais das doenças neurológicas equinas no estado de Minas Gerais. |
