Abstract: | The aim of this research is to comprehend the concepts Migration and Diaspora from the Haitian diaspora experiences. This focus makes it possible to trace multiple meanings for these terms and localize them in the context of Americas –especially related to Brazil and Haiti relations –with the purpose of creating reflections on the role of Psychology regarding the questions these experiences pose. As found with the literature review, migration can be defined by the mobility of a person or group beyond international or interstate frontiers. However, it is a mistake to reduce the concept to this definition considering the different meanings attributed to migrations and its migrants. The concept of diaspora is even harder to define as it includes the act of belonging to certain communities, outside their place of origin, while inserted within cultural and political conflicts in both imigration and emigration societies. Taking the experience of haitians living in Brazil as a reference, the importance of the comprehension of the terms is shown, especially in a context permeated by colonialist ideals. Therefore, it is Psychology’s function to produce knowledge that contradicts these ideals and consider mobilities and territories as useful elements on the construction of subjectivities. A theorical and methodological implication, that is not pathologizing, racist and colonialist,is vitalin order to encompass the complexity of migratory experiences. |
