| Abstract: | Eurytremiasis is an important parasitic disease of cattle that was recently suggested to be a neglected and emerging human disease in Brazil. Based on a misinterpretation of the life cycle of the parasite, it was suggested that a great number of people could be infected with this fluke in the country. In the present letter, aspects of the life cycle of Eurytrema spp. are revisited and clarified. The mechanism of transmission previously reported for the few accidental human cases involved the ingestion of raw or undercooked insects (grasshoppers and crickets) harboring the infective metacercariae. In reality, the zoonotic potential of Eurytrema species is extremely low, and human eurytremiasis is not, and probably never will be, a zoonotic disease in countries where entomophagy is not a common food habit. |
| Abstract: | A euritremíase é uma importante doença parasitária dos bovinos que foi recentemente sugerido como sendo um tema negligenciado e emergente doenças humanas no Brasil. Baseado numa má interpretação ciclo de vida do parasita, foi sugerido que uma grande número de pessoas pode estar infectada com este verme no país. Na presente carta serão abordados aspectos do ciclo de vida de Eurytrema spp. são revisitados e esclarecidos. O mecanismo de transmissão relatada anteriormente para os poucos casos acidentais casos humanos envolveram a ingestão de alimentos crus ou mal cozidos insetos (gafanhotos e grilos) que abrigam as metacercárias infecciosas. Na realidade, o potencial zoonótico de espécies de Eurytrema é extremamente baixa, e a a euritremíase não é, e provavelmente nunca será, uma doença zoonótica doença em países onde a entomofagia não é comum hábito alimentar. |
