Abstract: | The work addresses transitions to sustainability in agriculture, specifically focusing on the operationalization of agroecological systems in family farming. The multi-level perspective on sociotechnical transitions and the novelty production approach are used to analyze the case of agroecological cotton in the microregion of Unaí-MG. In addition to a literature review, the empirical construction of this study employed a combination of exploratory and descriptive techniques based on the use of focus groups and individual interviews as its research methodology. Family farming plays a key role in the transition to a more sustainable agricultural model and the implementation of disruptive innovations capable of transforming the current agri-food production system. The case of agroecological cotton in Unaí helps illustrate how the structure of the sociotechnical regime characterized by agribusiness is self sustaining. It also shows how the macro context of the landscape creates pressures for change while simultaneously reinforcing the dominant system. Furthermore, it highlights the role of family farming in the adoption and adaptation of more sustainable systems, such as agroecology. The collaboration among various actors in carrying out the analyzed initiative underscores the need for a holistic approach in building a more sustainable agriculture. |
