Abstract: | The text reflects on the disputes over the city's built heritage, analyzing the case of the occupation of a mansion built in the first half of the 20th century, located on Rua Manaus in Belo Horizonte/MG. In 2013, a group of activists occupied this mansion and became the headquarters of Espaço Comum Luiz Estrela. We affirm that by summoning the memory of Luiz Estrela, a homosexual and homeless person, the occupation presents the struggle of LGBTQIA+ people to survive in cities. The text also dialogues with the perspective of bodily performances as a way of tensioning cisnormative narratives that we find in most Brazilian museums. We conclude that welcoming a new understanding of museums involves confronting disparities in representation and including the memories of different social groups in their narratives. |
