O nacionalismo brasileiro em quatro anos de governo : uma análise do discurso de Jair Bolsonaro

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the nationalist rhetoric in Jair Bolsonaro's speech over the four years (2019 - 2022) in which he was the President of Brazil. To this end, the theoretical framework used is led by the studies of Billing (1995), who understands nationalism as na ideology anchored in the dichotomy of "us" versus "them", in addition to highlighting the relevance of using elements of national identity to boost the feeling of belonging of an individual to a nation. The dichotomous character of nationalism enlightens scholars to identify such rhetoric in various research on populism (Eatwell and Goodwin, 2020; Tamaki, Braga and Fuks, 2021; Batista, Haubner and Orlandini, 2022), hence the ideational understanding (Mudde, 2019) and anti-pluralist (Muller, 2016) of populism are also part of the literature base of this work. For data selection and analysis, we worked with the quantitative methodology of the "Holistic Approach" (Hawkins, 2009), used for coding and analyzing the speech of political leaders. The corpus of this work is made up of a total of 80 speeches, divided into five types, including famous, international, inauguration, electoral campaign and Thursday lives. The analysis was ugly in the light of two headings, national-self and national-others, and the score achieved by Bolsonaro was 0.29, a result that classifies his speech as little nationalistic.
