Abstract

Introduction: Male sterilization surgery (MSS) is a highly effective and cost-efficient family planning method, though it is associated with some complications. Sexual dysfunctions have been described in up to 3% of patients who undergo the procedure. While several studies have examined the impact of vasectomy on sexual satisfaction, few have included a control group. The parameters used to measure sexual satisfaction have varied widely, lacked precision and many studies utilizing non-validated assessment tools. Objectives: This study aims to prospectively evaluate the impact of MSS on sexual satisfaction in couples by utilizing the International Index of Erectile Function-15 (IIEF-15), the Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT), and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Methods: The study involved administering the IIEF-15 and PEDT to patients undergoing MSS, while the FSFI was given to their partners, both before and after the procedure. The scores from these assessments were compared to evaluate the effect of the surgery on the sexual satisfaction of both men and women. Results: The comparative analysis of the scores before and after the MSS demonstrated an increase in the total score of the IIEF-15 questionnaire (68,0 pre versus 68,4 post), a reduction in the score of the PEDT questionnaire (5,6 pre versus 5,0 post) and an increase in the total score of the FSFI questionnaire (30,2 pre versus 30,9 post). However, the differences noted were not statistically significant (p >0,05). Conclusion: The findings from this study indicate that MSS does not negatively affect the sexual satisfaction of couples as measured by the IIEF-15 and PEDT, for men, and the FSFI, for women.
