Abstract: The current thesis aims to research some Brazilian rock bands in the 1970s. As a research object, we have taken into account the bands Casa das Máquinas, O Terço, Recordando o Vale das Maçãs, the trio Sá, Rodrix & Guarabyra and the duet Sá & Guarabyra. The choice of these bands came from listening to their music which allowed us to detect some of the compositions containing the issues proposed in this work. Above all, we sought to detect and show those selected artists production, throwing light on the ideas and representations those musicians had in their compositions about the city and the countryside, modernity and tradition, their relationship with the recording industry, closeness to the counterculture and possible criticism towards capitalist modernization during the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship in the 1970s. Therefore, we verified that those musical groups do not only show a single way of producing and executing their rock music, but also a wide range of sonorities in their musical performance. As the main goal, we then analyzed the selected artists performances, highlighting the following contents: performances, aesthetic of rock in roll, sonorities, utterances, production context, receptions, iconography, organological knowledge, and relationship with the cultural industry. We especially tested the hypothesis that those artists constituted dissonant and discordant voices among the ones who fought against the civil-military dictatorship (the engaged); also among those who, whether purposely or not, ignored the political regime then (the alienated), and in that part of the civil society which accepted an exception regime in the country as well. We advocate that those musicians were not only transgressors or subversive, neither they lived totally alienated from the military dictatorship nor from all the economical-technological devices in the cultural market of that time, but also lived in that between-places through the dictatorship context and the discussions about the Brazilian music national identity and internationalism. From hearing such masterpieces, we also considered the hypothesis that their compositions showed relevant approach to the counter-cultural romantic concept which features, as main traces, modern social isolation, emphasis on community life, traffic between the city and the countryside, idealization of life in the countryside and the desire for life in the natural environment, as well as criticism of capitalist society found in those bands production. Furthermore, we sought to support a discussion on how those musicians in question, and some musical critics, worked on the national identity concept through their opinions, artistic discussions and their musical acts, and how those artists brought a different proposal to rock in roll and the Brazilian music.
