Prevenção e diagnóstico precoce de câncer bucal como uma contribuição à saúde da família

Abstract

Oral cancer is among the ten more frequent cancers in head and neck, but presents great supervened index, specially if compared to other types of the illness, mainly if detected precociously. However many cases of this illness are detected in advanced period of development and it compromises the treatment and quality of life of the affected people. Health professionals must be enabled to detect precociously and to be capable to instruct the population to identify the signals and symptoms of the illness. The objective of this work was to perform a literature review on prevention and precocious diagnosis of the oral cancer. Literature review was carried through from bibliographical research in Bireme in the databases BBO, Scielo and Lilacs, for publications in portuguese language, dated in the period of 1998 and 2010. Applied exclusion criteria 10 articles were selected for reading and analysis. The results shows the necessity of a bigger performance of the surgeon-dentist in the precocious detention of the illness; on the other hand there are just few works that define strategies to be followed for these professionals in this preventive work. Such gap must serve of alert, in such a way that more works can be carried through foccusing the paper of the surgeon-dentist as preventive and promotional agent of health for the oral cancer.
