O preconceito em relação ao exame de toque retal como forma de rastreamento do câncer de prostáta

Abstract

The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system that is under frequent occurrence of hyperplasia and neoplasia; early detection of such changes could reduce treatment costs and increase survival. There are basically four types of diagnostic methods able to detect asymptomatic pathological changes of the prostate and the digital rectal exam seems to be one of the most accurate. This study aimed to review the literature in order to assess the perception and eventual prejudice of men against the digital rectal examination for early diagnosis of prostate cancer. It was observed that one of the main obstacles encountered by health professionals in primary care with regard to preventive procedures are lack of information, embarrassment, fear and prejudice. Even knowing the importance of screening for early diagnosis and prevention, individuals show a great resistance for doing it. In order to ensure successful prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, the population has to be better informed about the importance of procedures such as the preventive digital rectal examination and evaluation of serum prostate specific antigen. The family health team Rio Espera, is continuously improving men´s access to health care, through lectures and prevention groups that show the importance of prevention of prostate cancer and may have the support from managers and nurses.
