Abstract

This study provides a narrative review of literature on oral health care of the elderly of the Family Health Program (PSF) Tiradentes. The objective of this study was to review the literature about the conditions of oral health (edentulism) of the elderly population to subsidize the planning-evaluation of actions in this area, at different levels of management of the Unified Health System (SUS). An active search was carried out for information in databases and BBO SCIELO virtual library, in the period of 2000 to 2009, dissertations and doctoral thesis available on the Internet, books of the Specialization Course in Primary Care Family Health, and books from the Ministry of Health and health guide lines of the Government of Minas Gerais, in addition to SB Brasil 2003 (BRASIL, 2004). The increased life expectancy puts the discussion of the oral health of the elderly and increased attention to this age group as the real needs of the SUS. The poor state of maintenance of the teeth of the elderly and the high prevalence of edentulism are a reflection of an access to the oral health care, their living conditions and with the a strong social and cultural influence that can contribute to a aggravation of the elderly health and decrease in their quality of life. Edentulism is a public health problem that generates a great need for prosthetic replacement). The increase of to dental services access in the SUS is a real need and very important to ensure the principle of equity in the use of dental services. The oral problems can be minimized and controlled with the consolidation of the PSF, adjusting the society involved end its reality. It is suggested to standardize the conduct of studies on the oral health of seniors.
