A capitania do Espírito Santo sob a égide dos Filipes: escravidão, comércio de escravos e dinâmicas de mestiçagens (1580-1640)

Abstract

The central theme of this thesis is the slavery in the Captaincy of Espírito Santo, from 1580 to 1640, a period in which the Iberian Union was established. It seeks to investigate both the slave trade, as well as the aspects related to the social and cultural dynamics in the Captaincy. The aim is to establish a relationship between the Captaincy of Espírito Santo and the colonial slave trade circuit. The proposed discussion, therefore, aims to discuss and expatiate on the world of work and their workers. To this, we seek to examine the use of labor, both of those forms of work that used the Indigenous people, as slaves or villagers, and of those that had made captive the mestizos (mamluks), Africans, and their descendants. The research aims to lead to a dialogue between the way slavery was understood by historiography and the new approaches on the subject. In this sense, we intend to interact with the historiographical production, reflecting on the world of work as a cultural practice, reinvented by agents of conquest, in the midst of the colonial system in Asian societies of the New World. To highlight the uses of Indians labor whether for slavery or forced labor, in theCaptaincy of Espírito Santo, we aim to demonstrate how the sources contributed to the invisibility of the Indian and the mestizo (mamluks). However, to reflect on the theme of slavery, we did not lose focus on the initial process of the African presence, which took place in the Captaincy of Espírito Santo. The factors that promoted the provided coexistence and living together between the indian as a slave and the african are essential to understand the connections and dynamics of the New World.
