| Abstract: | A presente dissertação tem por objeto a discussão da virtude da temperança () no texto da Ética Nicomaquéia de Aristóteles. Procuramos, por um lado, reconstruir em linhas gerais o contexto histórico relevante para as discussões de Platão e Aristóteles acerca da temperança. Por outro, apontamos as dificuldades que surgem a partir da leitura do tratamento aristotélico da virtude, revisando as interpretações propostas na literatura secundária acerca do tema. Em especial, procuramos resolver uma dificuldade acerca da caracterização das disposições da temperança e da intemperança com relação ao prazer e a dor. Para tanto, valemo-nos de uma análise detalhada dos capítulos nos quais o filósofo discute a virtude, isto é, EN III.10-12. |
| Abstract: | Our research deals with Aristotle's account of temperance () in the Nicomachean Ethics. Our goal is twofold: first, to briefly reconstruct the relevant historical context for the discussion of Plato and Aristotle. Second, to point out the main difficulties in Aristotle's account while going through the main interpretations introduced by the secondary literature. Our main goal will be to analyze the seeming paradoxical characterization of the temperate and intemperante dispositions with regards to pleasure and pain. In order to solve the paradox, we will proceed by a detailed analysis of NE III.10-12. |
