Vem ver Belém a festejar: análise de cenas comunicativas do Círio de Nazaré

Abstract

This thesis has as its investigation question the following: what is communication and how it is constituted based on scenes of Círio de Nazaré, a religious and cultural manifestation in devotion to Our Lady of Nazaré that occurs every year in Belém (Pará) during the month of October, with emphasis on the procession of the second Sunday of the month, which is considered the biggest catholic manifestation of the world, reaching the number of 2 million participants. Given the magnitude of the festivity, many studies about Círio have already been carried out in different areas of knowledge. In Communication, the multi-interactional and experiential constitution of Círio lacks and, at the same time, provides aspects for many approaches in the area. In these terms, from a relational perspective, we analyze how communication constitutes the relationships established between subjects in Círio based on different forms of experiences and interactions that the occasion raises. Based on the pragmatic guideline in the process of articulating the empirical object and theories, we built the concept of communicative scenes to act as a methodological operator for the analyses of communicative interactions in the micro social context of two families, identified as: Filhos da Esperança and Família de Catarina. These families have different configurations and socioeconomic and cultural profiles, and their histories interweave with the fulfillment of a vow of handcrafting small rosaries and giving them to people in Círios processions. With a hybrid methodological design, we configured and analyzed six scenes, from which we could understand the interactions established in the scope of Círio and produce more general inferences about the communicative processes. Based on these scenes, communication is evidenced as multidimensional in the empirical phenomenon studied, not only for its multi-element structure, but, above all, for the symbolic inter-acting of these elements, with them being significant, affecting themselves and generating affections. This reveals that what moves and brings together so many and so different aspects and subjects in Círio and in other interactive contexts, we can say is the symbolic, that is, the signification and the experience of the subjects in relation to themselves and with these elements. Based on specific scenes of these families in Círio, we also theoretically infer more general typologies of scenes, with the objective of supporting future studies. In the thesis we also present a reflection on the acknowledgement of communication in our own research process, allowing us to experience what we thought and to think about what we experienced
