Abstract: | Using implants to replace missing teeth of partially or completely edentulous patients allow them to regain function with no concerns for denture stability and comfort. Because implant and prosthetic survival rates are good, the main challenge dentists face in long-term evaluations is to minimize the peri-implant bone loss and soft tissue inflammation, both of which are considered common issues of implant therapy. Many implant systems have been developed in order to avoid these issues. Therefore, the goal of this work is to study marginal peri-implant bone loss relating it to the implant-abutment connection used for the three most common connection types: external hexagon, internal hexagon and Morse taper. According to the literature, there is some evidence that internal connections tend to present themselves with smaller marginal bone losses, specially regarding conical connections. However, there is no data to support a direct correlation between marginal bone loss and the use of different implant/abutment connection types. |
