dc.description.abstract | Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a method of respiratory support for the patient and not a curative therapy. Its objective is to provide adequate ventilation and oxygenation to patients in an artificial way without damaging the lung microstructure and at the same time minimizing the potential for complications. Nowadays, in veterinary medicine the pressure-controlled mechanical ventilation is the most widely ventilation mode used to improve oxygenation and prevent damage to lungs. However, more studies should be conducted to find the best form of ventilation in dogs to reduce the chances of barotrauma, and especially of biotrauma that is capable of generate systemic effects that may contribute to morbidity and mortality in this species. It was aimed to review the indications and contraindications for the use of mechanical ventilation, as well as describe the mechanism of operation of mechanical ventilators, highlighting its use in dogs. | pt_BR |
| pt_BR |
