Background: Dental extractions are still very common procedures in dental practice. The consequences are physical and psychosocial, compromising the patients’ quality of life.
Objectives: Analyze the epidemiological profile of patients submitted to dental extractions at the oral surgery clinics of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Federal University of Minas Gerais - Brazil.
Methods: The period of data collection was from January 2012 to December 2017. The clinical records collected were: gender; age; comorbidities; anual income; teeth extracted and the cause of the dental extraction. Incomplete or unsigned records were excluded from the sample.
Findings: A total of 1870 medical records were evaluated. Among them, 61% of the patients were male. The mean age was 36.90 years (SD: 15.75), varying from 0 to 89 years. The most prevalent comorbidities were hypertension (15%) and diabetes mellitus (4%). A total of 2318 procedures were documented. The main indications for the dental extractions were caries in patients until the third decade of life and periodontal disease between the fourth and sixth decade of life. The cross - sectional data revealed a statistically significant relationship between low - income patients and the extraction of incisors, canines and first molars. There was no statistical relationship between income and removal of third molars.
Conclusion: Dental extraction is the main procedure performed in the oral surgery clinic of the present institution. Knowing the profile of patients and procedures is important to plan actions that optimize the quality of care and prevent complications.
