dc.description.abstractThis paper presents the semantic history of the concept of sovereignty and the history of its pragmatic uses in the first quarter of 19th Century in Brazil. The historical methodology is provided by conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) and the Cambridge contextualism. The main historical sources are the proceedings of the Constituent and Legislative General Assembly of the Empire of Brazil of 1823, the texts of Friar Joaquim do Amor Divino Caneca, the manuscripts and printed pamphlets published from 1820 to 1823, and official documents.

A metodologia histórica é oferecida pela história dos conceitos (Begriffsgeschichte) e pelo contextualismo de Cambridge. As principais fontes históricas são os anais da Assembleia Geral Constituinte e Legislativa do Império do Brasil de 1823, os escritos de Frei Joaquim do Amor Divino Caneca, os panfletos manuscritos e impressos publicados entre 1820 e 1823, e documentos oficiais.
