dc.description.abstractEotaxin-1/CCL11 is a chemokine originally implicated in the selective recruitment of eosinophils into inflammatory sites during allergic reactions, being thoroughly investigated in asthma, allergic rhinitis, and other eosinophil-related conditions. Eotaxin-1/CCL11 is also involved with a skewed immune response toward a type-2 (Th2) profile. In addition to its role in immune response, recent studies have shown that eotaxin-1/CCL11 is associated with aging, neurogenesis and neurodegeneration, being able to influence neural progenitor cells, and microglia. Increased circulating levels of eotaxin-1/CCL11 have been described in major psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression), sometimes correlating with the severity of psychopathological and cognitive parameters. As similar findings have been reported in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, it has been hypothesized that mechanisms involving eotaxin-1/CCL11 signaling may underlie the “accelerated aging” profile commonly linked to psychiatric disorders. Future studies must determine whether eotaxin-1/CCL11 can be regarded as a prognostic biomarker and/or as therapeutic target for resistant/progressive cases.

local.description.resumoA eotaxina-1/CCL11 é uma quimiocina originalmente implicada no recrutamento seletivo de eosinófilos para locais inflamatórios durante reações alérgicas, sendo amplamente investigada em casos de asma, rinite alérgica e outras condições relacionadas a eosinófilos. A eotaxina-1/CCL11 também está envolvida em uma resposta imune desviada para um perfil do tipo 2 (Th2). Além de seu papel na resposta imune, estudos recentes demonstraram que a eotaxina-1/CCL11 está associada ao envelhecimento, à neurogênese e à neurodegeneração, sendo capaz de influenciar células progenitoras neurais e a microglia. Níveis circulantes elevados de eotaxina-1/CCL11 foram descritos em transtornos psiquiátricos graves (esquizofrenia, transtorno bipolar, depressão maior), por vezes correlacionando-se com a gravidade dos parâmetros psicopatológicos e cognitivos. Como resultados semelhantes foram relatados em doenças neurodegenerativas como a doença de Alzheimer, foi levantada a hipótese de que mecanismos envolvendo a sinalização da eotaxina-1/CCL11 possam estar na base do perfil de “envelhecimento acelerado” comumente associado a transtornos psiquiátricos. Estudos futuros devem determinar se a eotaxina-1/CCL11 pode ser considerada um biomarcador prognóstico e/ou um alvo terapêutico para casos resistentes/progressivos.
