Although according to 2010 Belo Horizonte´s Greenhouse Gases Emission Inventory the Land Use sector was responsible for the removal of GHG from the atmosphere, due to massive trees planting in protected areas, the contribution from streets afforestation and remaining trees in private properties to this removal is un unkown quantity. The lack of knowledge about those trees, supposed to be a hindrance to the establishment of a proper management policy for them, fostered the development of a Tree Inventory and Information System to both creating a databank of urban trees, allowing for the updating of the data collected following their life span, as for creating means to administering intervention procedures designed to individual or to groups of trees. The aim is to optimize the effectiveness of actions and their costs for the sake of maintaining healthier trees and to avoid, or to properly tackle with, problems caused by their interference with infrastructure lines and their fall, due to storm. Albeit the initial cadastering of 300.000 trees on a GIS have not been enough to cover for the whole urban area, results already points out the vast array of different species existing in the city, mostly native species, the importance of keeping trees in private properties to the maintenance of climate and mobility conditions of sidewalks, and the opportunity that such a system presents as a toll for planning actions, including pest control and eradication.
