Resumo
A new environmentally safe technology for the removal of dyes was evaluated. A new polymeric nanofiber with a natural carotenoid bixin was used as an adsorbent. The material was manufactured by the electrospinning technique. The behavior of bixin nanofiber in the sorption on dye compounds was studied by investigating the deposition time, area, medium pH, ionic strength, adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms. Removal greater than 96% and 70% for BG and MB, respectively, was obtained under the following conditions: dye solutions of 20.0 mg kg−¹, pH 6.00, and supporting area of 6.76 cm−² of the adsorbent material (80 min of deposition of nanofibers on each face). The kinetics presented the best fit to the pseudo-second order model. Dye recoveries using real water samples from taps and lakes, as well as from aquaculture industry were over 58% and 78% for MB and BG, respectively. Thus, polymeric bixin nanofibers are promising for application as dye remover for water remediation.
