| dc.description.abstract | Quando eu era adolescente, minha matéria favorita na escola era português. Durante na primeira semana de aula eu tinha um ritual de pegar o livro do aluno e ler todos os tópicos e textos anteriores que íamos cobrir ao longo do ano. EUainda me lembro de alguns textos marcantes, poemas, letras de músicas e debates envolventes que participei quando estava na meia-idade. Acho que minha paixão pelo assunto foi diretamente ligado, além do meu apoio familiar, com o tipo de material que eu tinha a oportunidade de estudar e os professores que tive na adolescência. Está claro para mim agora como essas aulas me motivaram e me tornaram um leitor melhor, escritor e também crítico. Hoje, como professor de línguas, meu principal objetivo é tornar meu os alunos se sentem motivados a aprender como eu estava. Tendo isso em mente, o Language Knowledge is Power foi criado. O objetivo deste material é ensinar inglês usando textos autênticos e por meio de tópicos estimulantes que atrairão o interesse dos alunos e os convidarão a pensar criticamente sobre o mundo e a língua. Este material foi desenvolvido para adolescentes e jovens adultos de institutos de idiomas em um nível intermediário. A Unidade 1 “Heroes & Heroines” contém uma variedade de textos, imagens e vídeos de pessoas inspiradoras como Harvey Milk, Rosa Parks, Marie Curie, Malala Yousafzai e muitos outros para ajudar os alunos a pensar, discutir e construir sua própria ideia de herói/heroína de forma crítica e sensível. Além disso, eles serão convidados a fazer um paralelo entre a realidade e heróis e heroínas fictícios. Na Unidade 2 “Vício”, os alunos aprenderão sobre o vício através de diferentes perspectivas (negativas e positivas) em uma variedade de contextos e situações. Eles serão convidados a refletir sobre as histórias, imagens e vídeos apresentados e também para construir sua própria opinião sobre o tema. | |

| local.description.resumo | When I was a teenager, my favorite subject at school was Portuguese. During the first week of school I used to have a ritual to take the student´s book and read all the topics and texts previously that we were going to cover throughout the year. I can still remember some remarkable texts, poems, song lyrics and engaging debates that I took part when I was in middle years. I think my passion for the subject was directly connected, besides my family support, with the type of material that I had the opportunity to study and the teachers that I had in my adolescence. It is clear to me now how those classes motivated me and made me a better reader, writer and also a critical person. Today, as a language teacher, my main goal is to make my students feel motivated to learn as I was. Baring this in mind, Language Knowledge is Power was created. The purpose of this material is to teach English using authentic texts and through stimulating topics that will hook students interest and invite them to think critically about the world and the language. This material was designed to teenagers and young adults from language institutes in an intermediate level. Unit 1 “Heroes & Heroines” contains a variety of texts, images and videos of inspiring people such as Harvey Milk, Rosa Parks, Marie Curie, Malala Yousafzai and many others to help students to think, discuss and build their own idea of hero/heroine in a critical and sensitive way. Also, they will be invited to make a parallel between real and fictional heroes and heroines. In Unit 2 “Addiction”, students will learn about addiction through different perspectives (negative and positive) in a variety of contexts and situations. They will be invited to reflect about the stories, images and videos presented and also to build their own opinion about the topic. | |
