local.description.resumoThis paper proposes a list of dimensions for the assessment of education quality based on the Capabilities Approach. A literature review is conducted to select the relevant dimensions, considering the main aspects of the capabilities perspective and other contributions made by authors working specifically with education within the approach. This results in a list of nine dimensions, divided into two groups: capabilities to access education and capabilities through education, following the suggestion by Vaughan (2007) to account for two ways that education can be theorised within the approach. An illustrative application using data from Brazil is also put forward. It covers students from the 9th grade and includes variables related to students, teachers, principals, and schools, totalling 49 variables. The ranking of Brazilian States according to the index and its dimensions suggests the multidimensionality of education, as the ordering of States varies greatly by the dimensions under study. Moreover, the dimension representing a traditional view of education based on the human capital approach showed a quite weak correlation with scores on other dimensions, meaning that a narrow focus on educational results may not encompass the many aspects of education that are valued in the capabilities perspective. This calls for the need of multidimensional measures that take into account a broader notion of education.
