What is the association between social capital and diabetes mellitus? A systematic review

dc.description.abstractO capital social foi incluído como um elemento que poderia influenciar a autopercepção de saúde, mortalidade e doenças mentais. Revisamos sistematicamente artigos que estudaram a influência do capital social no controle do diabetes mellitus (DM). Foram incluídos estudos publicados até 16 de fevereiro de 2017, sem restrição de tempo ou ano de publicação. Os estudos quantitativos foram incluídos por apresentarem um parâmetro bem definido para avaliar o DM e medir especificamente o capital social. Usamos as diretrizes PRISMA e STROBE para realizar esta revisão e avaliar a qualidade dos artigos. Apenas três artigos preencheram os critérios de inclusão. Todos os estudos adotaram delineamento transversal. A população, os instrumentos utilizados para medir o capital social e a análise estatística foram diferentes entre os artigos. Em conclusão, embora o capital social pareça estar relacionado ao DM, mais estudos são necessários para entender quais dimensões são mais importantes nessa associação, se a associação é a mesma em nível individual ou de bairro, e que tipo de população em termos de escolaridade , pobreza e cultura seriam mais influenciadas pelo capital social no controle do DM.

local.description.resumoSocial capital has been included as an element that could influence the self-perception of health, mortality and mental diseases. We systematically reviewed papers that studied the influence of social capital in the control of diabetes mellitus (DM). We included studies published up to Feb. 16, 2017, without restriction of time or year of publication. Quantitative studies were included since they presented one well-defined parameter to evaluate DM and specifically measured social capital. We used the PRISMA and STROBE guidelines to perform this review and to evaluate the quality of papers. Only three papers met the inclusion criteria. All studies adopted cross-sectional design. The population, the instruments used to measure social capital, and the statistical analysis were different among the papers. In conclusion, although social capital seems to be related to DM, more studies are necessary to understand which dimensions are more important in this association, if the association is the same at the individual or neighborhood level, and what kind of population in terms of education, poverty and culture would be more influenced by social capital in DM control.
