Compras sustentáveis no supermercado: inglês, tecnologia e prática social

Abstract

This final paper presents an interdisciplinary teaching proposal focused on English language instruction through socio-environmental themes, especially conscious consumption and sustainable practices in grocery shopping. The approach aims to integrate vocabulary and language structure learning with the development of students’ environmental awareness. Through communicative activities such as guided discussions, eco-friendly grocery lists, group tasks, and reflections on shopping habits, students expand their linguistic repertoire while developing critical thinking and citizenship skills. The project uses real-life situations – such as going to the market – to promote meaningful, functional language use. Topics include the differences between organic and conventional food, the role of packaging, label reading, waste reduction, and vocabulary related to sustainability and food. The proposal aligns with Brazil’s National Curricular Base (BNCC) and fosters the development of key competencies such as social responsibility, empathy, and student agency. Through contextualized tasks and active language use, the project offers teachers a meaningful way to teach English by connecting language, culture, and environmental citizenship.
